The difficulty grew out of the losing of 25 or 30 hogs by Savage. It was reported that Thompson took them when Savage was away from home, and sold them. Thompson claimed that Beech started the report, and demanded a retraction of Beech, and Beech refused. Thompson drew a revolver and shot him in the back, the ball running downward, and lodging in the stomach. Beech is in critical condition, and is not expected to live. Thompson fled the county immediately. Both men had good reputations before.
