Stout Ended Sunday last, at noon, J.V.D. Stout passed away at the old homested three and one-half miles east of this city. Mr. Stout was born in Somerset County, New Jersey, April 2d, 1816, and at the age of 22 started for the far west, having heard of the famous hotel, the Mansion House, which was then in the course of erection in this place. When he arrive the building was nearly completed. He went to Green County where he lived a short time, when he returned to Morgan County where he has since lived. He followed building and contracting for some time and in 1859 he moved to the farm which he occupied until the time of his death. He was a firm Christian while at the same time he was tolerant of the views of others and had charity for all. He was very devoted to his church and when able was always to be found in place at all the meetings and during the past two years when he has been ill, it has been a privation to him not to be able to be at his accustomed place on Sunday. In politics, he was originally a democrat, but at the repeal of the Missouri Compromise he cast his fortunes with the Republican party and was a member of the first state convention. In later years he was identified with the Greenback and Labor organizations as long as he was able to take an active part in anything. Mr. Stout was a kind father in his family. He was always ready to do a favor when it was needed and he never sought to make reputation for himself by any act of kindness, but was very modest and retiring. He left his family the rich legacy of a good name and they may well bless his memory. He was married October 8, 1850 to Helen Voorhees, of Whitehall, but originally of New Jersey and he leaves three sons, A. V. of Iowa, P. D. with whom he lived and J.V. of this city. The funeral occurs this morning at Salem Church at 10 o'clock and burial will be in Jacksonville cemetery."
