Obituary for Dr James Pankhurst, Ogle County, Illinois Dr. James Pankhurst, for nearly 57 years a practicing physician in and around Grand Detour, was born in Westfield, Sussex county, England, Jan 18, 1845 and died at his home Jan. 8, 1926, survived by his widow and one daughter, Miss Bess Pankhurst, a teacher in the Oak Park schools. At the age of five he came to America with his parents, the family living in Pennsylvania for about a year before coming west to Grand Detour. Their residence in Ogle County was interrupted for a short time when they moved to Iowa, from which state they returned to Grand Detour. At the age of sixteen the deceased enlisted in the union army for service in the Civil war, his enlistment extending until Sept. 27, 1862, during which time he was stationed at Camp Douglas. After his discharge from the army he returned to Grand Detour and started reading medicine in the office of Dr. C.E. Loomis. In the fall of 1865 he entered the medical department of the University of Michigan and on completion of his studies there he entered the office of Dr. J.A. Snyder of Grand Detour.
