Chicago, Cook Co., Illinois Monday, November 9, 1857 pg. 1 THREE MAIL ROBBERS ARRESTED – On Saturday forenoon, U. S. Marshal Davidson lodged three men in the jail of this county, who were arrested in Peoria county. Their names are L. P. Griswold, David (sic – s/b Daniel) Lochbaum and Solomon Lochbaum, and they were drivers of the mail stage between Canton and Elmwood, in Peoria county. Griswold was arrested first, and poached upon the whole gang. It appears that Solomon Lochbaum had stolen a mail lock key from the Knoxville Post Office last winter, and in conjunction with his brother, has been robbing the mail ever since. Some time ago they made a haul of $440 in Platte Valley, Nebraska money, and finding it was uncurrent, induced Griswold to sell it for them. While trying to dispose of the bills he was arrested and made a clean breast of the whole thing. The other men were then arrested and taken before Justice Metcalf, of Peoria, where they pleaded guilty. The prisoners told the officers that $200 of the stolen money could be found in the lining of the back seat of one of the stages, and the stolen key under the boot of the same coach, wrapped up in a piece of paper with some breastpins. The robber had loaned $432 of the stolen, the notes for which, were found upon their persons, and the whole amount of money recovered, is about $1,000. Suspicion had several times before been directed to the Lochbaum, and complaints made to Mr. Gouch, the stage agent at Peoria, but he refused to discharge the men, alleging that they were the best drivers he had, and that he was confident they were innocent. When the affair was made known to him, however, Mr. Gouch was very active in securing the arrest of the guilty parties. Additional Comments: Daniel & Solomon Lochbaum were sons of Josephh Lochbaum, Jr. & Kezia (Lemmon) Lochbaum. Solomon was convicted, as he is found in the Illinois State Penitentiary @ Joliet for the 1860 Census. - - - 1850 Census - Letterkenny Township, Franklin Co., Pennsylvania; pg. 317B HH as of June 1, 1850 - Enumerated October 2, 1850 - #241-247 Joseph Lockbaum, 72, W, Laborer, Penn Catharine, 36, F, Penn Daniel, 13, M, Penn, attd sch Solomon, 11, M, Penn, attd sch Andrew, 9, M, Penn, attd sch Samuel, 7, M, Penn, attd sch Joseph, 5, M, Penn * 1855 State Census - Knox Township, 11 North 2 East, Knox Co., Illinois Census Date: July 3, 1855 Joseph Lochbaum HH Free White Males: 1 - 0/9; 5 - 10/19; 1 - 70/79 Free White Females: 1 - 0/9; 1 - 40/49 = 9 Total Militia: 1 Value of Live Stock: $40 * 1860 Census - The Town of Joliet, Will Co., Illinois; P.
