July 20, 1909 Editor Advocate Dear Sir Please find enclosed one dollar to pay for the Advocate. Wife and I are getting along fine here in the garden of Eden where the flower gardens are in full bloom too beautiful to behold. You must see to realize how beautiful this home of the braves and their beautiful wives is. The old boys are dropping off pretty fast. Yesterday we buried the first woman (colored) under the honor of the military rule. The Pinckneyville boys and their wives are getting along fine. Comrad Davis and wife are quartered in cottage 20, Comrad Logan and wife are in 24 with wife and I. A good many are going out on furloughs of 90 days. Some of you Perry county folks might come up and see us we have plenty of room to entertain you. Excursion boats from St. Louis almost every day. Hundreds visit the home. There is no danger getting lonesome up here. I will close by adding Gods blessing on dear old Pinckneyville. Yours respectfully, W.H. Sterling Friday, October 28, 1910 (when printed in "The Advocate") Soldiers and Sailors Home Quincy, Ill., October 25, 1910 Editor Advocate: The Soldiers' Home is filling up rapidly. Each day brings new men and women to the home. Twenty-three couples waiting to get rooms. The adjutant report shows number of women 166, men 1, 403, total in home 1,569. Sick in hospital, men 211, women 14. Absent with leave 10. Well, the old boys and girls are getting along fine; Golden and wife are here, James Logan and wife and Wm. Godwin and wife. I think Billie Godwin is improving. His hand is steady enough for him to write letters home. This is a fine health place. We have had one frost. Yours Respectfully, W.H. Sterling, Cottage 24 -- Room 30. ***************************************************************** USGENWEB NOTICE: In keeping with our policy of providing free information on the Internet, data may be used by non-commercial entities, as long as this message remains on all copied material.
