Joseph Otta [sic: Otto] Tanner, lifelong resident of the Pinckneyville community passed away September 8, 1955, at the Marshall Browning Hospital, Du Quoin, Illinois, after a brief illness. He was the son of Thomas and Louise Schmidt Tanner and was born July 27, 1890. He was married to Laura Gass on January 4, 1911 and to this union six children were born. Mr. Tanner spent his entire life in the rural Pinckneyville community in the farming and mining industry. He was a member of the Galum Baptist church, being an ordained deacon in this institution and was always a faithful member in attendance. Being firm in his Christian belief, he was always greatly concerned over lost souls. He was a member of the local Mine Union No. 7537 U.M.W.A. for many years. Surviving are his wife, Laura; three sons, Herschel, Du Quoin, Harold and Virgil Pinckneyville; two daughters, Beulah Brown, Pinckneyville, and Helen Benson, Cutler; two brothers, Henry and Frank Tanner, Pinckneyville; and fifteen grandchildren; besides a host of relatives and friends who will greatly miss him. One son, Raymond, preceeded him in death when an infant. Funeral services were conducted from the Galum Baptist Church with Rev. Harlod Braynor, Elkville, and Rev. Delbert Penrod of Murphysboro, pastor of the church, officiating, on Sunday, September 11, 1955 at 2 o'clock p.m. Interment was made in the Mueller Hill Cemetery. ____________ Card of Thanks We wish to thank all our friends for the many acts of kindness and sympathy at the death of our dear husband and father, Joseph Otto Tanner.
