A Resident of Monticello Township since the fall of 1851. At his home on Stringtown Lane where he was the last of the pioneers of his section to enter a wild claim and create a, valuable farm. Andrew C. Varner passed away at 2:00 a. m. Saturday morning after a serious illness of but a single day. Had he lived until Oct 21 next, he would have been 92 years old. He was 32 years old when he came to the county from Green County, Ohio, with his family. He first resided in Monticello where he taught at the village school. In all he spent about two years In teaching before settling down in fall of 1853 on the present home farm of some 200 acres, opposite Stringtown school. Mr. Varner was born October 21, 1819 near Hagerstown, Md., in a house standing squarely upon Mason & Dixon's line. He often remarked that he ate in Pennsylvania and slept in Maryland. At the age of ten the family moved to Green County, Ohio, where Andrew lived until coming to Platt County. He was 22 years old when he married Iva Paxson, by whom one child was born, George D. of Goose Creek. After her death he married Emily Painter of Ohio, Mar. 26, 1850, who came with him to this county. To them were born Ella, Clara, John, Jeremiah Mills, Mary, Richard, Capitla, William, Andrew C. Varner JR. Mr. Varner was a man of educational tendencies. He served for many years as school treasurer of his township. The funeral was held from the residence at 2: 00 p.m. Monday and the remains were laid in Monticello cemetery beside those of his wife whose death occurred years before. Rev. W. E. Bell preached the sermon, and the Masonic fraternity had charge of the funeral. The deceased had been a member of Fraternal Lodge A. F. and A. M. since Sept. 26, 1863. The oldest member in years and one of the oldest on the roll.
