Transcribed by Cindy Pegg Thomas Collier was born in Pope County, Illinois in 1824. He was the son of John Collier who was born in North Carolina in 1761. John Collier was first married to a Miss Dees. After the death of his first wife, he married Elizabeth Pitchford in 1818. Elizabeth and John had four sons, two that died in Missouri in 1821. John Collier died in 1833 at the age of 72 years and his wife died four years later. Thomas Collier had very little education. He attended the subscription school of that period for a few weeks learning to spell and read a little. He lived with his older brother, David, after the death of his mother. In 1861, Thomas married Mrs. Margaret Hogg, nee Vaughn, the widow of Lewis Hogg. Her parents Joseph and Keziah (Derman) Vaughn were from Tennessee. Margaret was born in Pope County, IL May 28, 1834. She first married at the age of 18 and had five children from that union. Some of the children were Keziah, wife of William N. Wagner; Aquilla, wife of Nathan Goldsby and Francis. Thomas and Margaret Collier had eleven children, five sons and six daughters, three of whom died in infancy. Mary C. wife of Green Van Bibber, died in March 1892, at the age of thirty years leaving six children. Other children of Thomas and Margaret were; David who married and had four children; Aseneth who married John Asbell and had two sons; James and John W. Thomas and his wife were members of the United Baptist Church.
