Obituary of Reinhardt Children, Randolph County, Illinois Contributed for use in the USGenWeb Archives Copyright 1999 Schendel Name of Deceased: Harry Clifford and Ethel Mae REINHARDT Name of Newspaper: Chester Herald Date of Newspaper: 25 November 1909 Children Burned At Sparta On Wednesday morning of last week, two small children 2 1/2 and 18 mos. were burned to Death in a fire at Sparta which destroyed the building on the old dairy farm near Moffat Mine south of Sparta. The building was occupied by three families among whom was Conrad Reinhardt, his wife and *two children who occupied rooms on the second floor. Mrs. Reinhardt had gone to get a pail of water and had stopped to talk to some person downstairs when the flames suddenly burst forth from the second story. The stairway to the second floor led on up from the outside of the building and as the women on the premises attempted to reach the second floor and save the children, the flames burst forth upon the stairway increasing the fury making it impossible to get upstairs. The charred and blackened remains were found in the ruins as soon as the fire had sufficiently subsided to permit workmen to enter them. E. F. Sobry and Sam Mason, two single men who lived in the building lost $1400.00 and $60.00 respectively. Money which they hid in their trunks. They expected to leave this section in a few days.
