Obituary of Martha Jane GARDNER, Richland County, Illinois Contributed for use in the USGenWeb Archives Copyright 1999 Mike Dean From the Olney Daily Mail December 10, 1932: Martha Jane Gardner, daughter of Jackson and Nancy Jane Gardner, was born in the shields neighborhood, September 4, 1860 where she grew into womanhood. On her 18th birthday September 4, 1878 she was married to Eli Curtis. To this union six children were born, two dying in infancy. The oldest daughter, Mrs. Ed Hornback passed on to the life above four years ago. She lived her whole life in the immediate vicinity of her birth. When the Christian Church of the Shields neighborhood was organized she became a charter member and lived devoted to her Lord to the end. For several years she had been poorly, during which time she found time to study and meditate on the word of God, finding great consolation in its message. Sister Curtis was a splendid mother and Christian woman and loving wife and companion. Uncle Stephen Cheek one of the early ministers of her cheered her much with his messages and song.As the year's rolled by her hope of eternal life. She departed this life Dec. 8, 1932 aged 72 years three months and four days. She is survived by her husband Eli Curtis, one son and two daughters,Mrs. Arthur Kinkade, Piper City and Mrs. Fred Runyon and Gilbert Curtis of Elgin, Illinois, four grandchildren Mrs. Ivan Dean, Olney Ill., Ralph Kinkade, Piper City, Cebert Hornback, Olney, Ill. and Virginia Runyon, Noble, five great grandchildren and many other relatives and friends.
