Obituary for Henry Wait Henry Wait was born on Isle La Motte and grew to manhood there. At the age of 17 years he was drafted into the army and at Swanton Falls, VT was under the command of Captain Pettis. He served from June 1812 to November 1812 as a scout and was in the Battle of Plattsburg. In the later years of his life he drew a pension for that service. After the war he went on foot over into New York State, probably to Massena where he had a brother and other relatives. He stayed there for awhile and then started out again on foot and traveled down to Ohio near the town of Marietta. Here he met and later married Sophia Wells who had come from Vermont to Ohio with her parents when she was quite young. Their first child, Martin, b. 4 Oct. 1818 died young and another infant, b. 12 June 1820 died very soon. With their third child, William, they moved into Indiana about 1823. They settled in Switzerland Co. where they raised a large family and lived for fifty years on the same farm. Most of their children moved farther west to Illinois and in 1874 Henry and Sophia joined them and lived near Reynolds (IL) until they died. - Source: Citizens of Mercer Co., Ill., 1914 Mortuary list for the past year for the Old Settlers Group, which was read at their meeting: Henry Wait was born in Vermont in 1793, left his home in that state in 1817 and traveled on foot to near Marietta, Ohio. On 1 January 1818 he married Miss Sophia Wells. In 1823 they started from Ohio in a flatboat on the Ohio River and landed near Rising Sun, Switzerland County, Indiana, where they lived until 1874. Then they moved to Rock Island County where they resided until Mr. Wait's death. He has been a member of the Methodist Church for 50 years. His sons, Meigs, William, and Jacob Wait are influential members of the county. His widow who has shared his joys and sorrows for 64 years remains with sons, daughters, and grandchildren.
