She graduated from Moline High School. She was a 1974 honors graduate of the University of Iowa, where she received a bachelor of science degree in nursing. She was a member of Alpha Phi Sorority. Carol was a veteran and a naval officer, serving as a lieutenant in the Navy Nurse Corps as a charge nurse at the Naval Medical Center in San Diego, California from 1982 to 1984. Carol’s career in nursing involved employment as a registered nurse in a number of different medical facilities: at the former Moline Public Hospital and the former United Medical Center, and the former Lutheran Hospital, all in Moline; at Trinity Medical Center in Rock Island, and Genesis Medical Center in Davenport, Iowa; at Illini Hospital in Silvis, Illinois; and at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago. During her long nursing career she worked in many different fields, including emergency room, floor nursing, cardiac care, intensive care, neo-natal care, psychiatric care, extended care, and hospice nursing. More recently, since her retirement in 2004, she was a volunteer at the Faith Lutheran Church Literacy Program. She had an active and inquiring mind, was an avid reader, and had many intellectual interests, but her family was of paramount importance to Carol. She was devoted to her parents, siblings, and nephews and nieces, but always left some room to exercise her love of animals, especially cats. Her survivors include her father; sister and brother in law, Amy and Jeffrey VanEchaute, Moline; brother and sister in law, David and Mary Neighbour, Davenport; nieces and nephews, Margaret, James and Clare VanEchaute, and Sarah Neighbour.
