Services for Horace Paul, 91, of Viola will be 11 a.m. Friday at the Aledo 
Church of the Nazarene with the Revs. Paul Aurand and Chleo Brown, 
officiating. Burial will be in Viola Cemetery. Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. 
Thursday at Speer Funeral Home, Aledo. Pallbearers are LaVerne Bethell, Jimmy 
Bethell, Neal Martin, Bob Dillbeck, Roger Hahn, Connie Randolph, Dave Crow and 
Perry Whan. Memorials may be made to the Viola Fire Department or Viola 
Cemetery Association. Horace died on Sunday, May 9, 2004, at the Aledo Health 
and Rehabilitation Center. Mr. Paul was born Dec. 13, 1912, in Franklin, 
Howard County, Mo., son of Miles Edward and Ida Margaret Arnold Paul. He 
received his education in Cooper County, Mo. Horace married Effie Bethell, 
Feb. 25, 1935, in Aledo, Mercer County. To this union, five children were 
born: Donald, Jeanie, Kenneth, Alicia and Carole. The couple lived in Viola 
since November 1946. Mr. Paul was employed at Deere & Company as a machine 
operator for 30 years, retiring Oct. 12, 1972. His wife Effie passed away, 
Dec. 13, 2003. Mr. Paul was a member of the Mercer County Historical Society 
and the Aledo Church of the Nazarene. He was active in his church serving as 
steward, Sunday school teacher and on several church committees. Horace 
enjoyed gardening, mowing his lawn, reading his Bible, singing in the church 
choir and playing his guitar. His best friend was his wife, Effie. Survivors 
are his sons and daughters-in-law, Don (Doris) Paul, Rock Island, Ken (Kathy) 
Paul,Rockford, Ill.; daughters and sons-in-law, Jeanie(Harris) Nordin, 
Strasburg, OH, Alicia (Larry)Ives, Aledo, Carole (Dean)Davidson, Moline,; 
17 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and 
many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife; a son-in-law, 
James W. Morrow; and a grandson, Mark Nordin
