All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm This file was contributed for use in the USGenWeb Archives by: © Matthew ********************************************************************************* State of Illinois County of Sangamon Pension records of John White On this fourth day of June 1833, personally appeared before the County Commissions Court for the County of Sangamon, John White, who first being duly sworn according to law doth on his oath make the following declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the provision made by the act of Congress passed June 7th 1832 - I was born in the County of Armagh in Ireland on the 4th day of June in the year of our Lord seventeen hundred and forty two. I came to the United States about the year of 1765 and resided in Cumberland County, Pennsylvania, where I lived about eighteen years. When I removed to what is now called Washington County in the western part of Pennsylvania. I resided in Washington County about 3 years when I removed to Kentucky and resided about eleven miles from Lexington in Fayette County. In 1796, I removed to Green County, Kentucky where I resided 10 years. In 1806 I removed to Barron Co. Kentucky where I resided seven years when I removed to Green County, Ky, where I resided 8 years. In 1821 I removed to Sangamon County, Illinois where I have since resided. I know of no existing record of my age. I enlisted when residing in Cumberland County Pennsylvania, in January 1776, as a private in a company of the Pennsylvania troops commanded by Capt. Robert Adams, Lieut. William Bratton and Lieut. McFerron and served one year as a private - Our regiment was called the Sixth regiment of Pennsylvania. The regimental officers were Col. Irvin, Lieut. Col. Hartley and Major Dunlop. We rendevoued to Carlisle in Cumberland County, Pennsylvania. From Carlisle we marched to Philadelphia, New York, Albany, Stillwater & Saratoga. From Saratoga we passed by Fort Henry, Fort George & Old Fort George upon the 36 mile lake by Ticonderoga and Crown Point to Chambaler an old fort - thence on to the mouth of the Serolls(?) - thence on to the three rivers by (illegible). At this place we were engaged with Burgoyne’s army and defeated . From our company we lost eighteen privates and a corporal. Our whole loss was reported to be 350. We then retreated back on the same roads to Crown Point. After remaining four or five months at Crown Point. I was taken sick and sent to Fort George. I remained sick until the expiration of my term of service when I was discharged. Question 1. When & in what year were you born? Ans. In Armagh, Ireland in 1742. Question 2. Have you any record of your age & if so where is it? Ans. I know of none. Question 3. Where were you living when called into service. Where have you lived since the Revolutionary War and where do you now live – Ans. From Cumberland Co. I removed in 1783 to what is now Washington Co. Pennsylvania. From Pennsylvania I removed to Fayette Co. Kentucky – from Fayette I removed to Green County, from Green Co. to Barron Co. Ky. From Barren to Green Co. Ky. And from Green Co. to Sangamon County, where I now reside. Question 4. How were you called into service__ I entered with Capt. Adams for one year. Q. 5. State the names of some regular officers besides those named in the Declaration. I remember the names of Genl. Thompson – Col. Anthony Wayne - Question 6. Did you ever receive a discharge? I received a discharge but do not recollect from whom I received it or what has become of it - I have no documentary evidence of my service, nor do I know of any person whose testimony I can procure who can testify to my service - Rev. Chas. P. Matheny and Abraham Lanterman have been long acquaintances with me and will testify to my character for veracity and then belief of my having served on the above declared. I do hereby relinquish every claim whatever to a pension or annuity except the present & declare that my name is not on the pension roll of the agency of my state - Sworn transcribed to the (illegible) aforesaid John White
