S. A. Son of Mrs. Clergy Ballard, 1150 North Sixth street, Springfield. Born April 2, 1884, in Saratoga, Ind. Entered service February, 1918, in Texas. Received his training at Fort Leavenworth, Kans., and Long Island, N. Y. Sailed overseas in June, 1918. Served as engineer on Red Cross trains. Was gassed slightly. Was in Paris, France, when the Armistice was signed. Discharged in August, 1919.
