Jacob Wheeler, much of a figure in republican political circles of the state, dropped dead from heart disease, at his home at Springfield, Christmas night. He was a member of the state board of equalization, a member of the legislature, United States marshal, and subsequently revenue collector and was recently supervisor of the census of the Springfield district. He is credited with engineering the still hunt in the 34th district in 1885, which resulted in the election of a republican to the legislature, thereby breaking the deadlock and electing John A. Logan to the United States senate.
