Sawyer James B. Sawyer was born June 15, 1857, near Springfield, Illinois, and departed this life October 25, 1933, in Grenola, Kansas, age 76 years, 4 months and 10 days. Mr. Sawyer came to Douglas County, Kansas, at the age of six months, and lived near the town of Clinton. Here he grew to manhood and in 1879 he went to Nebraska, and in 1884 he married Minnie Scharf. To this union four children were born: Carry B., Gertie May, Homer Clifford and Jesse B. Homer, the mother and Gertie preceded him in death. He is survived by his two sons, Carry H. of Sedan and Jesse B. of Tribune, Kans., a brother, Elmer of Lawrence, Kansas; a sister Carrie of Jennings, Nebraska, and eleven grandchildren. Mr. Sawyer had been a farmer all of his life. He united with the M. E. church in 1888 at Algernon, Nebraska. In March, 1898 the Sawyer family moved to Chautauqua County, Kansas, and located near Belknap, where the mother died December 7 of the same year. Following a revival Mr. Sawyer transferred his membership to the M. E. church where he continued his membership the rest of his life. Seventeen years ago, Mr. Sawyer joined the Moline Lodge No. 215 of I. O. O. F. and was a member at the time of his death. Mr. Sawyer kept the family together and gave the children a good education, after which he sold the home place and retired, living in the vicinity of Grenola the past seven years, and moving into Grenola two years ago, where he died. Longfellow puts it in these words: The course of my long life hath reached at last, In fragile bark o'er tempestuous sea, The common harbor, where must rendered be Account of all the actions of the past. Funeral services were held the afternoon of Thursday, October 26th, conducted by Rev. H. A. Fintel.
