Nineteenth Annual Report of the Illinois Bureau of Labor Statistics, 1900
October 9, 1899, Elijah Matthews, top man, aged 60 years, married, lost his life 
at the Chatham Coal Company’s mine, Chatham. His duty was to take off the coal at 
the upper landing of the mine; there was some loose boards over a hole; while at 
work he stepped onto these loose boards, which tipped up, causing him to fall 
through the hole to the ground below, which caused his death. He leaves a widow.
