John Herman Scheibner loses his life in a mine accident. John Herman Scheibner, aged 71 years, well-known local coal operator, was seriously injured yesterday afternoon and died within a half an hour from injuries received when he was caught in the flight of a coal conveyor at the Springfield Co-operative coal mines, Eleventh and Ridgley streets. The accident occurred at 2 o’clock. The injured man was hurried to Springfield hospital, where he died at 2:40 o’clock. The coal conveyor is an automatic conveyance which carries coal from the pit to the wagon. Scheibner was feeding the coal to this conveyor when in some way his clothes were caught in a piece of machinery of the conveyor and his left leg and knee was badly crushed, the injuries of which caused his death. The dead man was well known in Springfield, especially in German circles. He was president of the Springfield Co-operative Coal company. He was born in Oeltsnitz Erzgelbirg, Saxony, Germany, December 13, 1844. He came to this country in 1868. He stayed in Pennsylvania two years, where he became acquainted with the mining business. In 1870 he came to Springfield and has resided here ever since. In 1875 the Springfield Co-operative Coal company was organized here with Scheibner at its head. They sank their first shaft in that year. The decedent is survived by his wife, Bertha, and one brother, Carl, residing in Germany. Funeral arrangements will be announced later.
