Fifteenth Annual Report of the State Bureau of Labor Statistics, 1896
Nicholas Young, aged 51 years, married, was killed at 9:10 a. m. May 10, 1896, 
by falling down the air compartment of the hoisting shaft at the mine of the 
Starne’s Coal Mining Company, Springfield, Sangamon county. A few days previous 
the escapement shaft had caved in near the bottom; the fan had been removed from 
the escapement shaft to a place near the hoisting shaft; a division of the 
hoisting shaft had been partitioned off for a temporary upcast and a boxing 
constructed for about thirty-five feet from the top of the partition to the fan. 
The escapement shaft had been repaired and the fan was being replaced near it. 
While an assistant was going for an ax Young walked through the boxing to the 
top of the hoisting shaft, where several men were suspending a cage. Their 
attention was attracted by a noise made by something falling down the 
compartment. On inspection it was found that the boxing was well lighted 
throughout, the fan having been removed from one end and a board from the other. 
It is supposed that being temporarily disengaged and taking an interest in all 
of the work then going on, he went through the boxing towards where the other 
men were working and in a moment of abstraction walked into the shaft. He left a 
widow and eight children.
