Hamlin Dies Former Attorney General Succumbs to Two Weeks' Illness Former Attorney General Howland J. Hamlin, 59 years old, died the other evening in Shelbyville, after a two weeks' illness. He was attorney general of Illinois from 1900 to 1904 and was a strong candidate for the Republican nomination for Governor. In 1904 he was mentioned for the United States senatorship. He was attorney for the railroad and warehouse commission under Governor Altgeld and Governor Tanner and was prominent in State politics. He leaves a widow and four children.
