Nineteenth Annual Report of the Illinois Bureau of Labor Statistics, 1900
March 12, 1900, John Klein, miner, 15 years of age, was instantly killed by a fall 
of slate in the Consolidated Coal Co.’s Reinecke mine, No. 2; his neck and limbs 
were broken. The slate was six feet long and five feet wide, and eight inches 
thick. His father, with whom he was working, was present when the accident 
happened.
