To the discerning eye and informed mind, houses have much to reveal of the history and social conditions of the times when they were first built. The keen observer is constantly rewarded by fascinating glimpses of the personalities of the first and subsequent owners. The more technically minded find pleasure in the study of building methods and ingenious uses made oft the most diverse materials. In sketching this book I have tried to show the construction of the early architecture of our small houses that date even in part from the 19th century which are very rare survivals today. The changes in the houses built by our forbearers and todays construction have swept great numbers of our old homes away. Many remaining have hid their identity behind recent alterations and additions. I hope this book will help preserve some of these old memories. Roger F.
