N. Goddard, of Lena at the age of 48 years, 4 months, and 21 days. For some time past, the deceased had been suffering from mental derangement, and for the last few weeks was under medical treatment at Elgin. No one was more sensible of the nature of his disease and its tendency than himsel for many weeks after he was first taken, and the last time he met with the people of God before he left home, he made an earnest request to be remembered by them in his prayers that he might be spared from the sad affliction that was resting upon him. He was born in Georgia, Vermont and at the age of 12 years gave his heart to the savior, and has ever since been a steadfast adherent to the cause he so early espoused, and more especially may it be said of him for the last few years, that "Redeeming love has been his theme". No one was more ready to talk of the religion of Christ th our departed neighbor. He loved the story of the Cross. In the spring of 1850, he came with the rest of his father's family to Illinois, and has resided near Lena, most, if not all of the time since. It has been the lot of the people of Lena to follow the mother, two brothers, and the father to their resting place in our own quiet cemetery, and now Newel is gone. One brother is left and we think two sisters, to mourn their loss. As we witnessed the leave taking in the church on the day of the funeral, and heard the words of lamentation as they came from the sorrowing heart of the only daughter, "Oh, my father", we were reminded of Newel, the young man of years ago, as he stood by the grave of the loved mother expressing his sorrow in words so like those that fell upon his once willing ear, but now made deaf by the touch of death. The young man became the loving husba and the loved father, and the deeply afflicted wife and children have t heartfelt sympathies of all, and many prayers will be offered for the comforting grace of God upon them in their sorrow. Brother S.N. Goddard has for many years been an acceptable member of the M.E. church in Lena and held the relation of local preacher, with much credit and the church most deeply feel their loss in his death. Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord, yea saith the Spirit and their works do follow them. Additional Comments: His health had been poor since his disability discharge during the Civil War.
