NEWELL G. GODDARD PASSED AWAY SATURDAY Lucretia S. Hotchkiss, one of the old residents of this community, passed away at her home Saturday, November 13, 1921, aged 85 years. The deceased was born at West Georgia, Vermont, December 11, 1836. She came to Illinois in 1855, and taught school for two years. In 1856 she was united in marriage to Newell S. Goddard and resided in Cedarville for some time, afterward they came to the homestead where she lived the remainder of her life. Her husband preceded her to the great beyond in 1875. She leaves to mourn her loss, one daughter, Mrs. R. W. Hill, one son, Warren C. Goddard of Lena, a sister Alice Bowker of Bradshaw, Neb., and four brothers H. H. Hotchkiss of Lena, W. N. Hotchkiss of Mason City, Iowa, C. M. Hotchkiss of Keota, Iowa, and A. U. Hotchkiss of Berkley, Cal., also five grandchildren, Edward N. Hill of Darlington, Wis., George P. Hill of Blanchardville, Wis., Mrs. William Dole, Mrs. LeRoy Babb and Mrs. Floyd Gillette of Pearl City, also nine great grandchildren. Mrs. Goddard united with the Methodist Episcopal church soon after coming to Lena. She was also a member of the W. C. T. U. Many friends mourn her loss as that of one who spent her life in doing good to others, encouraging the young to do right, comforting the afflicted and trying to follow the teachings of the scripture. A devoted mother and a loving friend has gone to her reward. Funeral services were held from the home at 1:30 Tuesday afternoon, Rev. W. M. Briggs officiating. R. E. Fate sang three of her favorite hymns and Mrs. Charles Indra presided at the piano.
