Hist. Soc. & unknown Stephenson Co., IL, paper "Keokuk County News," 18 May 1905: MRS. HOTCHKISS DIES She Was Nearly Ninety Years Old, Funeral May 11th. Special to the News. South English, May 16,--Bethiah M. Buck was born in Fairfax, Franklin County Vermont, November 18, 1816, died near Kinross Iowa at the home of her son, May 10, '05, aged 89 years, 5 months and 22 days. She was married to Hiram Hotchkiss in her 19th year, resided in Franklin county Vermont until March 1885 [sic, 1855] when she with her family removed to Lena, Stepheson county Illinois. She was the mother of seven children one dying in infancy six are yet living, two sons are in Iowa and one in California, and one in Illinois, one daughter living in Illinois and one in Nebraska. Early in life she united with the Baptist church and lived faithful until God claimed her. Funeral May 11, at the Brethren church east of South English by D. P. Miller from the 23, Psalm. OBIT., Lena, IL, paper, undated clipping: Mrs. Sophia (sic) Hotchkiss, for many years a resident of this vicinity, died at the home of her son, Wohlford (sic), at North English, Iowa, Wednesday morning, aged about 88 years. Mrs. Hotchkiss was one of the earliest settlers of this part of the state, coming here from New York State. Her husband died about six years ago and since that time Mrs. Hotchkiss had been making her home with her children. She went to Iowa last fall to spend some time with her children there, and word was received Wednesday of her death. Mrs. Hotchkiss is survived by six children as follows: Mrs. Pearle (sic, Lucretia -- Perlie Goddard was Lucretia's sister-in-law), of Chicago; Mrs. Alice Bowker,York, Nebraska; Madison and Wohlford of Iowa, Bert of California and Hiram H. of Lena. The latter went to attend the funeral. Additional Comments: Bethiah and her late husband lived in Stephenson County, IL, for over 40 years. She died during a visit to her sons who lived in Keokuk County, IA, and is buried in the Brethren Cemetery east of South English, IA.
