Armington Man Hangs Himself; His Health Poor

Thomas J. Mason, 77, was found dead at his home, two and one-half miles east of 
Armington Thursday morning with the body suspended from a corn dump.  At a 
coroner’s inquest a verdict of suicide while temporarily insane was reached.

Mr. Mason had been in poor health for three years.  He had made his home with 
his son, Sidney, and family.  When others of the family retired Wednesday night 
Mr. Mason remained reading.    This was not unusual as he usually retired later 
than the others.  When the son awoke at 6 o’clock Thursday morning he found his 
father’s body.  It was believed he had been dead six hours.

He had been married three times and the first two wives survive.  In 1876 he 
married Miss Mollie Higgs of Armington; in 1891 he married Miss Hattie Maxwell 
of Kansas; in 1901 he married Mrs. Catherine Williams, who died three years ago.

Besides Sidney, a son by his first wife, he is survived by one brother, 
Charles, of Armington, and one sister, Mrs. Belle Kunze, of Pekin.  He was a 
charter member of the Odd Fellows lodge.  He had been a resident of Armington 
vicinity all his life with the exception of a few years in Kansas.  

Services will be held at 2 o’clock Saturday afternoon at the Armington 
Christian church with the rev. S. B. Owings in charge.  Burial will be in Oak 
View cemetery.

Catherine Williams was Caroline Richards, daughter of Joseph Richards and Celia 
Emmaline Roach.  She was married first to W. W. Williams.
