Obituary Mrs. Jane English Nancy Jane English, the daughter of Joseph Harris and Martha Jane Scennett Harris, was born in Knoxville, Tenn., August 21, 1855. When she was about six years old her parents moved to Saratoga settlement in this county where her oldest brother, a Civil war soldier, died. The family then moved to Dongola where the father worked in the blacksmith shop of Jim Murray. All too soon, the father died and the mother and children moved to the farm east of Anna where two of the boys worked for James Walton, Sr. When the mother died Mrs. Walton took charge of the orphaned children and secured good homes for all of them. Jane was placed in the home of Mrs. Edward McInder in Jonesboro where she found a comfortable and pleasant home until she was grown. She was married to Joel R. English, a highly respected citizen of Jonesboro, on December 16, 1870. Eleven children were born to them but the husband and eight children, Libbie, Will, Frank, Charlie, Calvin, Robert, Mary and Marie, have all gone on before. Only Arthur of Kankakee, Mrs. May Hoss of Jonesboro and Mrs. Kittie Bizzell of Anna survive their mother. She also leaves 12 grandchildren and nine great grandchildren and one sister, Mrs. Hattie Tschudi. Mrs. English passed away at her home in Jonesboro on July 4, 1943, where she had lived most of her 80 years’ residence in this community. She became a member of the Methodist Episcopal church in 1879. She was more than faithful to her church. She was the living example of the principles of the Christian faith. For half a century she was the good Samaritan who worked for those in distress where the need was the greatest and the chance for any reward was the least. In addition to the heavy cares and responsibilities of her own large family, she became the confidant and foster mother to all her neighbors in trouble, sickness, and death. ------------------------------------------------------------- UGENWEB NOTICE: These electronic pages may NOT be reproduced in any format for profit or presentation by other organiza- tions or persons.
