Documentation for Philip Stuebe (Sept 15, 1817 to Oct 19, 1889) father of Hannah Stuebe (Jan 1838 to Mar 12, 1908) Philip Stuebe was born September 15, 1817, in Pomerania, Prussia, Germany, according to a record at the Illiana Genealogical and Historical Society in Danville, Illinois. However, death records of the Pape Mortuary in Danville, Illinois, list a date of birth as January 1, 1816. Census records give conflicting years of birth.(1) Philip's parents are not known.(2) Philip married Mary (or Mara) Koch in Germany. Mary Koch was born in 1817, in Pomerania, Prussia, Germany.(3) Philip Stuebe and his family immigrated to the United States in the mid-1850s.(4) Philip and Mary Stuebe were the parents of six children, all of whom were born in Germany. i. Hannah Stuebe was born in Germany in January 1838.(5) She immigrated to the United States in 1856.(6) Hannah Stuebe first married Ernst Lehmann on November 16, 1857.(7) Hannah (Stuebe) Lehmann married second Gottfried Lorenz on November 27, 1863.(8) The 1900 census indicates Hannah was the mother of 9 children and that only 4 were alive at the time of the census.(9) The single child of Ernst Lehmann and Hannah Stuebe Lehmann was Emma who was listed only in the 1870 census. The five children of Gottfried and Hannah Stuebe Lorenz that appear in census records are: Wilhelmina "Minnie" Fredericka, Louise or Louisa, Mary, Fred, and Lena Lorenz.(10) Hannah (Stuebe) Lorenz died March 12, 1908, and is buried at Springhill Cemetery in Danville, Illinois.(11) ii. Frederick Christian Stuebe, identified as Christopher in the last will and testament of his father, Philip Stube, was born in Germany on November 11, 1841.(12) He died in Danville, Illinois, on March 19, 1916.(13) He married Frederica Pries on June 8, 1865.(14) She was born in Germany in 1847.(15) She died in Danville, Illinois, in 1908.(16) Civil War records list a Frederick Stuebe of Danville in Company "C", 12th Illinois Infantry.(17) Frederick and Frederica (Pries) Stuebe were the parents of ten children: Frank (1866-1933); Louis (1869-1962); George (1872-1942); Lydia Coit (1875-1964); William (1877-1944); Albert (1880-1946); Josephine Riener (1882- 1957); Lina (1885-1906); Phil (1889- ); and Ernest (1894- ).(18) Naturalization papers were filed by Christian Stube on the 21st day of November 1870 whereby he declared on oath to Geo. Dillon, Clerk of the Circuit Court in Vermilion County, State of Illinois, he renounced forever all allegiance to the King of Prussia where of he was heretofore a citizen or subject.(19). Christopher Stuebe may have immigrated to the United States in 1855.(20) A 1900 Illinois census record for Fritz C Stuebe, Vermilion County, Danville Ward 4, District 72, indicates a wife named Fredericka, a birth date of October 1846, age of 53, year of immigration 1866, and 34 years in the United States. Children include George, Albert, Josephine, Lizzie, Phillip, and Ernest.(21) iii. John Stuebe was born in Germany on May 15, 1841.(22) He died in Danville, Illinois, in 1934.(23) He married Caroline Kraft on December 18, 1880, in Vermilion County, Illinois.(24) She was born in 1861.(25) She died in Danville, Illinois, in 1906.(26) Civil War records list a Private John Stube of Danville, Sep 18, 1861, Disch, July 23, 1862; wounds, Company "K" 37th Illinois Infantry.(27) John and Caroline (Kraft) Stuebe had a son named Leonard who was born in 1881 and died in 1934.(28) According to the 1900 Illinois census, John Stube was a naturalized citizen, had lived in the United States for 42 years, and had immigrated to the United States in 1857.(29) An Intention was filed by John Stube on the 2nd day of November 1868 whereby he declared on oath to E. A. McKee, Clerk of the Circuit Court in Vermilion County, State of Illinois, the he renounced forever all allegiance to Frederick William King of Prussia where he was heretofore a citizen or subject.(30) The First Papers of John Stube were recorded on January 7, 1887.(31) The Final Papers of John Stube probably were filed in 1890.(32) iv. Fredericka Stuebe was born in Germany in 1844.(33) She married George J. Walz on April 23, 1864, in Vermilion County, Illinois.(34) He was born in 1830 and died in 1907 in Danville, Illinois.(35) George J. and Fredericka (Stuebe) Walz had six children: George Jr.; Harry, born in 1865; Karl, born in 1867; Albert, born in 1871; Emma Renckin, born in 1875 and died in 1953; and Lena Woolsey, born in 1878. v. Frederick Stuebe was born in Germany on May 11, 1844.(36) He died in Oakwood, Illinois, on November 4, 1933.(37) He married Mary Hageman on December 5, 1867, in Vermilion County, Illinois.(38) She was born in 1844.(39) She died in Oakwood, Illinois, in 1927.(40) Civil War records list a Frederick Stebe in the 35th Illinois Infantry, Company D.(41) Fred and Mary (Hageman) Stuebe had five children: John, Fred, Pete, Harry, and Oscar. vi. Mary Stuebe was born in Germany in 1848.(42) She died in Danville, Illinois, in 1937.(43) She married Frederick Buy on August 28, 1867, in Vermilion County, Illinois.(44) He was born in Germany in 1844.(45) He died in Danville, Illinois, in July 17, 1938.(46) Civil War records list a Frederick Buy in Company "E", 149th Illinois Infantry.(47) Fred and Mary (Stuebe) Buy had eight children: Edward, born 1867; Carl, born 1874; Bill, born 1876; Harry, born 1879; Lulu; Mayme; Alice; and Jenny, born in 1871.(48) The 1860 U. S. Census for Danville Township lists Philip Steber, age 44, laborer, Mary Steber, age 49, Hannah Steber, age 21, John Steber, age 20, laborer, Fredrich Steber, age 19, laborer, Rebecca Steber, age 17, and Fritz Steber, age 15, laborer. All were listed as born in Germany. Real estate owned was listed as $240 and personal property was listed as $50.(49) The 1870 U. S. Census for Danville Township lists Philip Stube, age 53, farmer, male citizen of U. S., and Mary Stube, age 53, keeping house. Both Philip and Mary Stube were listed as born in Prussia and both with parents of foreign birth. Real estate was listed with a value of $3,000 and personal property was listed with a value of $250.(50) Living nearby to Philip and Mary Stuebe in 1870 are Frederick Buy, his wife, Mary (Stuebe) Buy, and their two year old son Edward Buy.(51) Also living nearby is a son, Frederick (Christian) Stube, age 27, and his wife, Fredericka (Pries) Stube, age 24, and their two children, James and Louis.(52) Another son also lived very near to Philip and Mary Stuebe in 1870. Fritz (Frederick) Stube, age 24, and his wife, Mary (Hageman) Stube, age 25, and their two children, John Stube, age 2, born in Illinois, and Fritz Stube, age 4 months, born in February 1870.(53) The 1880 U. S. Census for Illinois, Vermilion County, Danville Township, identifies many members of the Philip and Mary Stuebe family. In the margin of the census records, the street location of these families is noted as Bowman Avenue. This section of Danville was very likely the section known as Germantown. The Germantown fire station stood at the intersection of Bowman Avenue and Fairchild Street. The 1880 census lists Dwelling 329, Family 344, Philip Stebe, age 67, railroad laborer, born in Prussia, parents born in Germany, Mary Stebe, age 63, wife, keeps house, born in Germany, parents born in Germany.(54) Living in the same neighborhood in 1880 is Dwelling 328, Family 343, Fred Stebe, age 34, railroad watchman, born in Prussia, parents born in Germany, Mary Stebe, age 35, keeping house, born in Prussia, parents born in Germany, and their children: John Stebe, age 12, born in Illinois, parents born in Germany, Fritz Stebe, age 10, George Stebe, age 8, Edward Stebe, age 5, Caroline Stebe, age 4, and Charles Stebe, age 1.(55) Another son of Philip and Mary Stuebe is listed in 1880 in Dwelling 332, Family 347. Fred Stebe, age 37, works in coal mine, born in Germany, parents born in Germany, Frederika Stebe, age 33, keeps house, born in Germany, parents born in Germany, Frank Stebe, age 14, born in Illinois, parents born in Germany, Louis Stebe, age 11, George Stebe, age 8, Liela Stebe, age 5, Harry Stebe, age 3, and Willis Stebe, age 2 months, born in March.(56) A daughter of Philip and Mary Stuebe, Mary Buy, was listed as Dwelling 333, Family 348, in the 1880 census. Fred Buy, age 34, retail grocer, born in Germany, parents born in Germany, Mary Buy, age 32, wife, keeps house, born in Germany, parents born in Germany, Edward Buy, age 13, at school, born in Illinois, parents born in Germany, Jenny Buy, age 9, Carl Buy, age 6, Nellie Buy, age 4, and Harry Buy, age 10 months, born in August.(57) The 1900 U. S. Federal Census for Illinois, Vermilion County, Danville Ward 4, also helps identify the year of immigration to the United States of the Philip Stuebe family. S. Census for Illinois, Vermilion County, Danville Ward 6, lists John Stuebe, age 59 and immigration year 1857.(61) The 1900 U. S. Census for Illinois, Vermilion County, Blount Township, lists Frederick Buy, born October 1844, age 55, married, 32 years, immigration year 1856, naturalized, can read, write, and speak English, Mary Buy, born October 1848, 51 years old, married 32 years, mother of 8 children, 8 children living, born in Germany, parents born in Germany, can read, can write, can speak English. Carl Buy, born December 1873, age 26, single, born in Illinois, parents born in Germany. (62) The Danville, Illinois Directory for 1889 lists a Philip Stuebe of Danville, Illinois, with an occupation of laborer, Location 2: Alexander 2d e North Fork.(63) Philip Stuebe died October 19, 1889, in Danville, Illinois. (64) Mary (Koch) Stuebe died April 10, 1888, in Danville, Illinois.(65) The Estate papers of Philip Stube are numbered #6-525-559 - #7-13-240- 253-303 and copies are available at the Illiana Genealogical and Historical Society. The estate was closed on May 31, 1890.(66) The last will and testament of Philip Stube was dated September 17, 1873, and named his wife, Mary Stube, to receive all real estate and personal property during her lifetime, and at her death all the property to go to Johannah Lawrence, John Stube, Christopher Stube, Fredericka Walz, Frederick Stube, and Mary Buy, in fee simple, to share and share alike. Specific provisions were made for Fred Buy to hold in trust all property that was to go to Johannah Lawrence during the life of her husband, Gottfried Lawrence, and to pay the balance of rent and profits to Johannah Lawrence to the exclusion of her husband. If Johannah Lawrence died before her husband, Gottfried Lawrence, all of the property was to go to her children. Frederick Buy was named executor.(67) Frederick Buy signed a petition on October 24, 1889, stating the matters in the petition were true as set forth. The Petition was in the matter of the last will and testament of Philip Stube, deceased, filed November 11, 1889. The Petition stated that Philip Stube died on October 19, 1889, and left a paper purporting to be a last will and testament that nominated Frederick Buy to be the executor and signed by witnesses P. Wilber and C. M. Swallow.(68) The value of the decedant's estate was given and $11,000. The Petition stated that the decedent left no widow and left surviving the following named heirs at law: John Stube, Fredericka Walz, Frederick Stube, and Mary Buy his children and the following devisees: Johannah Lawrence and Christopher Stube. P. Wilber and C. M. Swallow signed a statement dated November 11, 1889, indicating that Philip Stube acted voluntarily at the time of signing the will and stating that they attested and signed as witnesses thereto.(69) A certification was prepared by the Illinois Printing Company stating that the attached advertisement had been inserted for four consecutive weeks in the Danville News newspaper from November 11, 1889 until December 2, 1889, concerning the Philip Stube estate.(70) A Bond of Executor was signed by Frederick Buy on November 11, 1889 regarding the estate of Philip Stube. The bond was in the amount of $22,000. The document was signed by Fred Buy, John Stube, Fred C. Stube, and E. B. Martin.(71) An Executor's Report indicated an Estate balance of $9,831.09 of which $1,764.37 was cash. The Executor asked to distribute $1,650.00 to the respective interests under the last will of the decedent. The money was to be distributed as follows: Self as trustee for Johannah Lawrence $275.00; Christopher Stube $275.00; Frederika Walz $275.00; Frederick Stube $275.00; Mary Buy $275.00; John Stube $275.00. The administrator further reported that Mary Stube the wife of said Philip Stube died several years before the death of said Philip Stube. A document entitled "In the Matter of the Last Will and Testament of Anna Lorenze Deceased" for the April Term 1908 indicates that Anna Lorenze died March 12, 1908, at Danville, Vermilion County, State of Illinois; the year of death is the same as that provided by Janet (Zillman) Shinkle, a cousin of Curtis L. Older. Janet received her information from Ernest Stuebe when she was in high school during the 1950s in Danville, Illinois. "This is what Ernest Stuebe wrote in a genealogy book which he gave me when I was in high school." Ernest Stuebe was the youngest son of Frederick Christian Stuebe and his wife Frederica Pries. Ernest Stuebe was born in 1894. Frederick Christian Stuebe was a brother of Hannah Stuebe and a son of Philip Stuebe and Mary Koch. "This is the Ernest that gave me the information" according to Janet. "My great grandmother Cristina Fuchs Zillman (married to Julius) was a granddaughter to Daniel Pries. He was born in Grimm, Pomerania, Germany in 1808. They are buried in Danville, IL." Tombstone of Hannah Stuebe Lorenz at Springhill Cemetery, Danville, Illinois. No dates appear on her tombstone.
