A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, March 22, 2005, at Mann's Chapel Cemetery, south of Rossville, with Walter DeWitt officiating. Pape Memorial Home and Cremation Gardens in charge of arrangements. Memorials may be made to the Humane Society, 1225 N. Collett St., Danville, IL 61832. Jerry was born Feb. 9, 1933, in Parma, Mo., to Jeremiah Lincoln Sr. and Mattie E. Wilson DeWitt. He attended Metropolis, Ill., schools and served with the U.S. Air Force in Korea. He had worked for Esco for 28 years, retiring in 1983 as a welder. He had been a member of the Vermilion Fishing Club and American Legion Post 210. Jerry married Helen Madge Drake Dec. 22, 1951, in Danville and she preceded him April 25, 2003. Survivors include three sons, Walter (Janice) DeWitt of Danville, Jerry (Kathy) DeWitt of Franklin, Tenn., and David (Celsa) DeWitt of Yigo, Guam; six grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and a sister, Arita (Earl) Shaw of Danville. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Helen, a brother, Jack DeWitt, and two sisters, Janet J. Benjamin and Gladys Vivian Johnson.
