Fifteenth Annual Report of the State Bureau of Labor Statistics, 1896
April 6, 1896, Allen Gordon, (colored), miner, aged 35 years, married, employed by 
Pawnee Coal Company at their mine near Westville, Vermilion county. The deceased 
and his partner had three shots to fire in room 35, fifth south entry; they put 
squibs in all three holes, two of which they lighted, and after the two had 
exploded they returned to light the third, but it exploded at about the time 
Gordon reached the place, killing him. He left a widow and two children.
