OBIT: Rossville Newspaper HEART ATTACK FATAL TO BUILDING CONTRACTOR TUESDAY MORNING J. W. Barcus, 80, prominent building contractor of Rossville, was stricken with a heart attack early Tuesday morning January 27, 1942 and died very suddenly at his home 215 Perry Avenue. Mr. Barcus was born October 18, 1861 on a farm 4 ½ miles northwest, of Rossville, son of John and Mary Hoagland Barcus. He was married to Miss Mary Trusheim on November 27, 1888. Mr. Barcus went to Iowa in 1869 where he lived for three years, returning to Rossville in 1872. He learned the carpenter trade in 1884. In 1894 he entered the contracting business with L. T. Austin. Two years later he formed a partnership with T. A. tucker , the partnership continuing many years. At the time of his death he was actively engaged in contracting with his son, George Barcus. Ms. Barcus has build 75 homes in Rossville. Mr. Barcus was active in Church and civic affairs. He was a member of the Rossville Methodist Church and director of the Rossville Building and Load Association. Surviving are his wife and three children: George Benjamin Barcus, Rossville; Mrs. Adeline Bennett of Hoopeston and Lawreance Barcus of Waukegan; Two brothers, George Barcus of North Dakota and Charles Barcus of Urbana; Two sisters Mrs. Lily Thomas of Washington, D. C. , and Mrs. Berta Huffman of Grape Creek; nine grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Funeral services were held at 2:30 p.m. today (Thursday) in the Methodist church conducted by the pastor, the Rev. E. a. Houldridge and the Rev. A. H. Flagge of Gibson City. Interment was in the Rossville Cemetery.
