Fifteenth Annual Report of the State Bureau of Labor Statistics, 1896
November 30, 1895, Joseph McGere, aged 24 years, employed as a loader by the 
Pawnee Coal Company, Vermilion county, at the mine near Westville. The deceased 
went into room 38 on fourth south entry at about 11:30 a. m. to load coal, when a 
large piece of roof fell on him. He lived about one hour and fifteen minutes after 
being taken out. The room was not properly timbered; the rock swung the timbers 
that were under it and came down.
