Myers, one of Danville's old and substantial citizens, after being confined to his bed for fifteen months almost continually, suffering from a complication of diseases, died at ten minutes to 9 o'clock last night at the residence of his son, C. E. Myers, 706 north Vermilion street. He commenced sinking at 6 o'clock and gradually grew weaker until death came to his relief, passing away without the least sign of pain or a struggle. He was conscious up to the time of his death, recognizing family and others but seemingly unable to speak. Everything was done that was possible to prolong his life but without success. James W. Myers was born in Newtown, Frederick County, West Virginia, on the 13th day of April, 1821. He learned the carpenter trade, and in 1853 removed to Danville, and with his brother, Henry Myers, engaged in the business of constructing and building. He later formed a partnership with T. H. Myers, deceased, in the grocery business which was afterwards dissolved and he opened up in the same business on the southwest corner of Vermilion and Main streets. In 1866, he sold his stock to Hooten and Denny, and in 1877, with W. W. Myers, engaged in the boot and shoe business on the east Main street. For the past eleven years he has followed his trade of carpentering. Three years ago this spring he had a very severe attack of hemorrhage of the lungs from the effects of which he never fully recovered, and from that time to his death he has been gradually becoming weaker, suffering intense pain at times. He has been confined to his bed almost continually since last spring a year ago, only being able to sit up for a few minutes. He was an active member of the Odd Fellows and Masons fraternity for several years but for the past few years had ceased to attend either of the lodges to which he belonged consequently his membership lapsed. Mr. Myers was married twice, his first wife dying in 1866. His second wife is still living. He leaves five children, all of age, as follows: Mrs. Samuel H. Greenawalt, now residing in Hummelston, Pa; Ben S. Myers, Crawfordsville, Ind.; Frank P. and Charles E. and Bettie M. Myers, of this city. The funeral will take place at the Cumberland Presbyterian church tomorrow afternoon, at 3 o'clock, Rev. A. B. Buchanon officiating assisted by Rev. W. A. Smith, and burial in Springhill Cemetery. Additional Comments: Frederick County, where James W. Myers was born, is in Virginia, not West Virgina as the obituary says. Additionally, Newtown was also known as Stephensburg, and is now called Stephen's City. I am descended from this person, have much more information on his family, and would be happy to correspond about them.
