Denham. As the date for the dedication of the monument recently erected at McCleary's Bluff in honor of the pioneers and heroes of early times who first settled in that vicinity. The committee on arrangements is working on the program, which will be announced later. It has been decided to have a old-fashioned picnic, and everybody in the county is invited to come and bring something to eat and join in the celebration. The soldiers of all wars are invited, and especially those of the Civil war. Some soldiers of the Civil war are buried at McCleary's Bluff, and two of the war of 1812 are sleeping there. These are John McCleary, born in New York in 1765, and James Denham, born in Kentucky in 1782. In the summer of 1916 a meeting of the lineal descendants of some of the pioneer families of that part of the county, whose ancestors are sleeping in this little home of the dead, was called to meet at the office of Dr. J.M. Phar in Mount Carmel. At this meeting the Bluff Monument association was organized with the following officers: President, D.W. Denham Vice President, Dr H.R. Lovellette Secretary-Treasure, Dr J.M. Phar Directors - W.B. Rigg, James Deputy, David Carlton, Dr H.R. Lovellette, John M. Phar, Mrs Lillian Strickland, D.W. Denham. By this time the war excitement had become so great, and such large sums had to be raised for relief work and other purposes, that the monument project was practically suspended until 1918, when the remainder of the money needed was subscribed to complete the monument and the contract was let. The monument was completed and erected late in November, but owing to the unfavorable weather it was thought best to delay the dedication till this spring.
