[Blank] in the Virginia Line, inscribed on the Roll of Illinois $20 per annum to commence 4 March 1831, issued 17 December 1833 and sent to Z. Casey, House of Representatives, under act of June 7, 1832, recorded Vol. 8 Page 65. War Department service record shows service May 1776 for ?2 months, rank of private under Cap. Tremble, service 1777, 3 months, no rank, commanded by Cap. Bowen, Washington Co., Virginia, proven by Traditionary evidence. Age at present [application] shown as 72 years. DECLARATION OF APPLICANT: State of Illinois, Washington County} On the 3rd day of June 1833 personally appeared before the County Commissioners Court of said County now sitting James Crabtree a resident of the aforesaid County and State aged near 72 years who being first duly sworn according to law, doth on his oath make the following declaration, in order to obtain the benefit of the act of Congress, passed June seventh 1832. That he entered the United States Service as a volunteer and was drafted under the following named officers and served as herein stated viz He entered the United States service as a volunteer in the Command of Capt. Robert Tremble, Wm Campbell Brigadier General, about the month of May in 1776 & that he serves as a ______ [looks like "hanyer" - mlj] for the term of three months in the State of Virginia defending & guarding the frontier settlements [sic], a Mr. ?S. ?C. ?Coin/Cain was Lieutenant of his Company & a Mr. Simms was sergent, [sic] that he served out his 3 months tour but got no discharge, & he further states that after this he was drafted some time in the next year for another three months tour under Captain Wm Bowen same general as before other officers not recollected. Served this tour also in Virginia, the Kings Mountain Battle took place in this tour but he being left to take care of the sick was not in the Battle - Capt Bowen was killed in sd battle & on that account he suposes [sic] he got no written discharge. That he resided in Washington County Virginia at the Big Salt Lick, called Kings Works that in the first time he marched thro [sic] the upper part of Virginia on the 2nd Tour he was marched to Kings mountain. That he was born in New London, Bedford County in the State of Virginia in the year, [17]62 Feb 20th the record of his age is now destroyed after the war was over in, [18]85 he removed to West Tennssee [sic] about 25 miles above Nashville that he removed from thence after living there about 24 years to the State of Illinois that he is now living in Washington County in sd state he recollects of no person living who was acquainted with his servis [sic] in the Revolution. I hereby relinquish every claim whatever to a pension or annuity whatsoever except the present and declare that my name is not on the pension rolls of the Agency of any state. Sworn to and subscribed the day and year first written. James [his J C mark] Crabtree We, Orcenett Fisher a Clergyman residing in the county of Washington and state of Illinois & James Short residing in the same County and State do hereby certify that we are well acquainted with James Crabtree who has subscribed & sworn to the above declaration; that we believe him to [be] of the age he states, that he is reputed in good [sic] believed in the neighbourhood where he lives to have been a soldier of the Revolution & we concur in that opinion. June 3rd, 1833. /s/ Orcenett Fisher, /s/ James Short Sworn to and Subscribed the day & year aforesaid. And the said Court do hereby Declare their opinion, after the investigation of the matter, and after putting the interogatories [sic] prescribed by the War department that the above named applicant was a Revolutionary Soldier and served as he states. And the court further certifies it appeard [sic] to them that Orcenett Fisher who has signed the preceding certificate is a clergyman resident in the county & state aforesaid and that James Short who has also signed the same is a resident in the same county and State, and is a credible person & that their statement is entitled to credit. I Orcenett Fisher clerk of the County Commissioners Court for Washington County and State of Illinois do hereby certify that the foregoing contains the original proceedings in the matter of the application of James Crabtree for a pension. In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and affixed the annexed scroll as a seal (there being no public seal) this 3rd day of June A.
