Rhodes. Sarah A. Martin was born in Menard county, Jan. 12, 1841. She was married to Alex. Rhodes Nov. 11, 1858, who still survives her. To this union was born 12 children, 5 of whom have preceded her in death. The remaining 7 are, 4 boys and 3 girls: John A., of Petersburg; Chas. P., of Medora; Wm. E., of Thackeray; Edgar E., of Springfield; Mrs. Alice Hartman, of Jacksonville; Lydia Neal, of McLeansboro; and Rilla Clark, of Petersburg. She died at her home in Springerton, Ill., Nov. 23, 1911, at the age of 70 years, 10 months and 11 days. She was a member of the Missionary Baptist church since 1885, in which relation she remained until she joined the church triumphant. Her closing years have been like a radient sunset, casting back the beautiful rays of hope to those behind and looking forward with effulgent brightness to the Glory World. The funeral service was conducted by Rev. W. O. Barnwell, Nov. 25, 1911, at 11 o’clock a.m., after which the remains were laid to rest in the Springer cemetery.
