Portrait & Biographical Album of Whiteside Co., Ill. pg.340 Andrew Mathew, farmer, section 6, Hopkins Township, is a son of William and Jennett (Wiley) Mathew, natives of Scotland, who came to America ni 1851 (see sketch of David Mathew), and settled in West Virginia, and came to Whiteside County in 1856 and passed the remainder of thier life here. They had ten children, named Thomas, David, William, Jeanette, Andrew, Ann, Margaret, Robert, Jane and Alexander. The subject of this sketch was born in Scotland, Aug 6, 1830. He received a common-school educaton and remained in his native land till about 1847, when he came to West Virginia, where he lived seven years, engaged in farming and at work on the Baltimore & OhioRailroad grading. In the fall of 1856 he came to Whiteside Conty and worked out for three years. He then rented a farm in Hopkins and Mr. Pleasant Townships for eight years. He then puchased 74 acres on section 6, Hopkings Township, where he settled and has since lived. He was married first in Virginia, to Mary A. Dumire, who was a native of Virginia. They had one child, Sarah C., who is now the wife of John S. Lingel and resides in Morrison. Mrs. Mathew died in Hopkins Township, in April, 1858, and Mr. M. was again married, in Carroll Co., Illinois, Jan. 29, 1860, to Rachel Hunter, who was a native of Scotland, being a daughter of Robert and Jennette (Cassells) Hunter. By this marriage there have been seven children,-- Jennette E., Margaret J., William A., Eliza M., Robert, Ella R. and Andrew T.
