They had a family of eight children, viz.: Sarah, Levi, Ellen, John, Jacob, Elizabeth, Job and Jessee. Mr. Bailey, the subject of this sketch, was born in Fulton Co., Pa., Oct. 28, 1828, and lived in his native county till 28 years of age. At the age of 20 he was apprenticed for two years to learn the trade of carpenter and joiner, which he followed till he came West. He came to Whiteside County in 1857 and remained for two years, engaged at his trade, and then went to Central City, Col., where he remained for nine years working at his trade and in mill­wright business. He then returned to Whiteside County, and purchased 60 acres of land in section 5, Hopkins Township, where he settled and has since lived. He is now the owner of 140 acres, most of which is in a good tillable condition. Since his return from Colorado he has engaged extensively in farming. He keeps about 20 head of short-horn cattle, four head of horses, and fattens annually from 30 to 40 head of hogs. In politics Mr. Bailey is a Republican.
