Chapin, farmer, section 24, Hume Township, was born July 28, 1852, in Litchfield, Conn. Hart H. Chapin, his father, was a cabinet-maker and died two months after the birth of the son. The latter was brought to Prophetstown, this county, when he was five years of age, by his mother, Julia (Johnson) Chapin, and they were residents of that village until about the spring of 1864, when they went to Hamilton, Hancock Co., Ill. The mother died there about nine years after. Mr. Chapin became a farm assistant on removal to Hamilton, coming later to Sterling and moving thence to Hume Township, where he was similarly occupied. Later still, he was employed on a farm in Lee County. He was married Feb. 19, 1880, to Delia, daughter of James H. Van Demark. (See sketch.) She was born Nov. 4, 1854, in Ulster Co., N. Y. She came to Illinois when she was 12 years of age, and was educated in the common schools of Sterling and Hume Townships. Mr. and Mrs. Chapin have one child, Myrta, born Dec. 14, 1883. They spent the year succeeding their marriage on a rented farm. In 1882 Mr. Chapin took'possession of 80 acres of land on section 24, belonging to the father of his wife. In political faith and affiliation he is a Republican.
