His parents, Samuel and Barbara (Bitner) Diehl, were also natives of the same State and had 12 children. Mr. Diehl of this sketch remained in his native State, pursuing the vocation of a farmer, until 1865, when he came to Illinois. He first made a location in Carroll County, spending but one year there. In 1866 he came to Whiteside County and bought a farm on sections 19 and 30 in Hopkins Township. He fixed his residence on the section last named, where he continued to live until 1871. In that year he purchased a house at Empire and has since been retired from active business life. His property in Hopkins Township includes 137 acres of land. Mr. Diehl was married in Franklin Co., Pa., Jan. 13, 1829, to Margaret, daughter of John and Barbara (Leep) Myers, and she is the oldest of a family of three children. She was born Aug. 27, 1808. To her and her husband ten children have been born, in the following order: Catherine, Elizabeth, Daniel, Lewis, Malachi, Adam, Mary, Jacob, Peter S. and Margaret C. The parents are members of the English Lutheran Church.
