McCray, farmer, section 6, Genesee Township, was born Aug. 30, 1850, and is the son of Martin D. and Margaret Ann (Crum) McCray. His father was a settler of 1838 in Genesee Township. He was born May 31, 1806, in Kentucky. His father dying when he was ten years of age, he went to Indiana, where he grew to manhood in the care of his uncle. Jan. 1, 1836, he married the sister of John Thompson Crum, who came to Genesee Township in the same year. The wife was born in Ohio, and their marriage occurred in Henry Co., Ind. They had five children and Mr. McCray is the youngest. His father died in 1863, and he remained, in his mother's care a year longer. She married John Yager, Nov. 16, 1863, and lives in Sterling. When her son, who is the subject of this sketch, was 14 years of age, he went to Coleta for the purpose of acquiring a knowledge of the trade of a blacksmith, under the direction of J. H. Gulp. After working a year he engaged in farming until 1870; then worked ten years for T. T. Daniels at Morrison, and in 1883 he again commenced farming. His marriage to Susanna Hurless took place Sept. 19, 1869. Mrs. McCray was born Aug. 20, 1852, in Wood Co., Ohio, and she is the daughter of Rev. Cephas and Elizabeth (Overholser) Hurless, of whom a sketch may be found on other pages. She was hardly two years of age when her parents located in Genesee Township. She is the mother of two children,—Edwin M., born May 8, 1870, and Perry A., born June 21, 1872. Mr. McCray is a Democrat. His wife is a member of the United Brethren Church.
