His parents were natives of Scotland, and died there in the year 1848. Their surviving children were born in the following order: Mary, Jeannette, John, William, Margaret and Jane; two died in infancy. Mr. Thomson was born March 19, 1822, in Scotland. He came to the United States in 1850, and settled in Virginia, where he was engaged in agricultural pursuits 13 years; after which he passed two years as a construction hand on a railroad in Maryland. In 1865 he came to Whiteside County, engaging first as a renter in Hopkins Township. In 1870 he bought 160 acres of land in the Township of Ustick. To this he has added by later purchase until he owns 380 acres, nearly all of which is under cultivation. The place is supplied with handsome and valuable buildings. Mr. Tompson was married June 2, 1847, in Ayrshire, Scotland, to Jane, daughter of William and Elizabeth (Walker) Bums. She was born Nov. 16, 1820, in Scotland. She has become the mother of eight children: Elizabeth W., Anna B., William, Archibald T., Robert B., Margaret J., Hugh D. and Mary J. Mr. Thompson is an adherent in politics of the National Greenback party, and in temperance principles is a prohibitionist. He and wife are members of the Protestant Methodist Church.
