DEAD BODY FOUND-A MYSTERY On Sunday, Sept. 9, while gunning on the Illinois side of the river, opposite Clinton, they discovered among the brush wood that had been left there by recent high water, the decomposed body of a man of medium height, dressed in a woolen, brown checkered suit, with No. 7 shoes. The skull, a well formed one, had fallen from the trunk, and the gaping mouth revealed nearly a full set of teeth in good preservation, two of the upper front teeth having been filled with gold filling. In the dead man’s vest pocket was found a tooth brush and two pencils, but no papers or valuables were found on his person. This “find” was at once reported to the parties in Clinton, but no action was taken in the matter until last Monday, when Mr. C. G. Bundy was passing up Second Street on his way to Lyons, and overheard a conversation about the body, between E. J. Everett, groceryman, and Joseph and John Rush. After inquiring into the particulars of this case this citizen went to Fulton and reported his information to Deputy Sheriff Fay, who telegraphed the Whiteside county coroner and a jury was at once empanneled, and an inquest held. The verdict of the jury was the man had come to his death from some cause to them unknown. This is the third body found on the islands opposite Clinton in the past four months.
