Armagast, engaged in the grocery business in Joliet, was born in Center county, Pennsylvania, July 20, 1861. His father, William Armagast, was a farmer in early business life but afterward became a merchant and for a long period was closely associated with commercial interests. In September, 1876, he came to this city and he and his wife, Mrs. Maria (Stemm) Armagast, conducted a boarding house just west of the Duncan house. Here he died at the age of seventy-four years. His wife, who was also born in Center county, Pennsylvania, is now living with her son Charles. In his early boyhood Charles S. Armagast attended the district schools of his native county and when fourteen years of age he came to Joliet with his parents. Later he was a student in the high school at Plainfield, Illinois, for two years and subsequently worked on a farm for three years. In 1881 he came to Joliet and entered the employ of J. Reichert at No. 407 Washington street, and upon the death of the employer in March, 1900, Mr. Armagast, in connection with Samuel D. Spangler, purchased the grocery business, in which they have since continued, having a well appointed store in which they carry a large and carefully selected line of staple and fancy groceries. On the 21st of May, 1885, Mr. Armagast was united in marriage to Miss Ida M. King, a daughter of Jeremiah King, one of the oldest settlers of this section. They have two children: Lloyd Armagast, twenty-one years of age; and Edna, eleven years of age, both at home with their parents in Joliet. Mr. Armagast is a member of Matteson lodge, No. 175, A. F. & A. M. He started out in life without special advantages, educational or otherwise, and has made steady progress through his close application and unfaltering diligence.
