Barr, one of the younger but none the less capable members of the legal fraternity in Will county practicing at Joliet, was born in Manhattan, Illinois, May 25, 1873, a son of George and Jane (McGrath) Barr. The father, a farmer by occupation, died in 1876. The common schools afforded George A. Barr his early educational privileges and he continued his studies in the Joliet high school and in the University of Illinois, being graduated from the latter in June, 1897, with the degree of Bachelor of Arts. He also spent one year as a law student in the university and for two years read law in the office of his brother. Hon. Richard J. Barr. Being credited with a year's law work in the university, he was admitted to practice in the courts of Illinois in December, 1899, and has since been an active member of the legal fraternity in Joliet under the firm name of Barr, Barr & Barr. He has given his entire attention to the profession and has secured a large and growing clientage, being the representative of important litigated interests. His practice is general, yet he makes a specialty of personal injury cases and has won some notable law suits of that character. He took two years in the military course in the University of Illinois while attending college and is a man of broad general information aside from his professional knowledge. Mr. Barr was married October 16, 1902, to Miss Mary Worrell Speer, a native of Joliet and a daughter of James B. Speer, an old resident of that city. They have two children, James Worrell and Joseph Milton. Mr. Barr is associated with various fraternal organizations. He is a Knight Templar Mason, belonging to Mt. Joliet lodge, No. 42, A. E. & A. M., the Royal Arch chapter and Joliet commandery, No. 4, K. T. He also belongs to Joliet lodge, K. P.; Illinois council, No. 1, of the White Cross; Knights of the Globe, the Modern Woodmen, the American Star of Equity, the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, and other fraternal and social organizations. He is, moreover, recognized as one of the prominent representatives of the republican party in Will county and was manager of the city campaign in 1905. For several years he was a member of the county central committee and was secretary of the city central committee in the campaign of 1903. The following year he was chairman of the township central committee and his labors in behalf of his party have been far-reaching and effective.
