A. Barthelme, wholesale and retail dealer in coal at Joliet. began business when nineteen years of age, embarking in the coal trade on a small scale, driving his own wagon. From the beginning, however, his trade has constantly grown until it is today one of the most extensive in his line in Joliet and Mr. Barthelme is recognized as one of the more successful among the younger business men. A native of this city, he was born March 21, 1882, and is a son of Frank and Elizabeth (Frederich) Barthelme, who were likewise natives of Joliet. The father has been in business in this city for a half century. The family settled here at a very early day and were among those who aided in the pioneer development and upbuilding of Will county. P. A. Barthelme was educated in the parochial schools of Joliet and was graduated when thirteen years of age. He then worked for his father for some time and subsequently became bookkeeper for the Eagle department store, in which capacity he served for three years, but ambitious to engage in business on his own account, when a young man of nineteen years he began dealing in coal and, as stated, drove his own wagon. The business has gradually developed until it has reached mammoth proportions and he now has five wagons constantly in use and employs six men. He handles all kinds of coal and wood and gives entire satisfaction in his business by his earnest desire to please his customers and his honorable methods. He is a member of the Knights of Columbus and of the Western Catholic Union. He is one of the youngest among the successful men of Joliet, being now only in his twenty-fourth year.
