Braun, proprietor of the Granite works at the corner of Cass and Collins streets, was born in Joliet in 1870. His parents were C. C. and Mary Antonia (Satori) Braun, the former a native of Frankfort, Germany, and the latter of Baden. The father came to Illinois about 1860, settling in Joliet, where he established a monument business, which he conducted successfully until 1886, when he was succeeded by members of his family and retired to private life. He died in 1888 and is still survived by his widow, who is yet living in Joliet, together with a sister of our subject. Conrad M. Braun pursued his education in the public schools of this city and early became familiar with the trade of marble and granite cutting. In 1900 he succeeded to the business which was established by his father and now does all kinds of marble and granite monument work and has enlarged his facilities, having a thoroughly modern shop with all the latest improved equipments and machinery. He uses pneumatic tools and employs only skilled workmen, keeping from four to six men. He takes contracts for all kinds of monumental work and some very fine specimens of his skill are seen in the various cemeteries in this locality. Moreover, he is energetic and resolute in his business and thoroughly trustworthy in all his dealings. Mr. Braun was married in Joliet, in 1898, to Miss Emma C. Stein, who was born in New Lenox, Will county, Illinois. They have two sons, Leonard H. and Carl C, who reside with their parents at No. 207 Hunter avenue, where Mr. Braun has erected a comfortable residence. Fraternally he is connected with the Modern Woodmen of America, the White Cross and the Knights of Pythias. Although he entered upon a business already established he has succeeded in enlarging its facilities and extending its scope, his trade increasing with the growth and development of the city.
