He came to the new world empty-handed and is today a prosperous agriculturist largely as the result of a life of industry and unfaltering diligence. He was born in Germany, at Bavarian, on the Rhine, on the 31st of March, 1844. His father, George Busch, was also a native of that place, born in 1792, and he served as a soldier under the great Napoleon. In civil life he always followed the occupation of farming and he held membership in the German Lutheran church. His death occurred February 10, 1849, when he was about fifty-seven years of age. His wife, who was born in 1802, passed away in 1861, and was buried on Christmas day. George Busch, whose name introduces this record, acquired his education in the schools of his native country and remained in Germany until 1860, when, at the age of sixteen years, he sought a home in America, having heard favorable reports concerning the business opportunities of the new world. He was fifty days in making the voyage across the Atlantic on the sailing vessel William Ferdigum, which eventually anchored safely at New York, where he remained until September, 1867, devoting his time and energies to blacksmithing during that period. From there he went to Martinsburg, West Virginia, and afterward to Chicago, in 1868. He thence came to Joliet, where he was employed in the rolling mills for thirteen years. On the expiration of that period he removed to Emmett county, Iowa, where he continued for six years and then returned to Will county, settling in New Lenox township in 1890. His home was one mile south of Marley, and there he lived until 1902, when he took up his abode at his present place of residence on section 15, New Lenox township. He started out in the world empty-handed, having only about ten dollars when he landed in America. He is today the owner of two hundred acres, constituting a very valuable property, and he also has land in Canada. Mr. Busch was married in 1873 to Miss Emma Dall, who was born on the Fox river, in Kendall county, Illinois, in 1854, and was a daughter of Jonathan and Amelia Dall. The former died in 1885, at the age of seventy-two years, while the mother passed away in 1890, at the same age. They were farming people and held membership in the German Lutheran church. Unto Mr. and Mrs. Busch have been born seven children: George, who is a fireman on the Elgin, Joliet & Eastern Railroad; Oscar, who is an engineer on the same road; Willie, living at home; Walter, who is attending school at New Lenox; Arthur, also a student in New Lenox; Emma, the wife of A. C. Haley, living at Goodings Grove, Will county; and Laura, a beautiful and accomplished young lady at home. Mr. Busch is not a member of any religious denomination, but gives his support to the German Lutheran church. He has been honorable and active in his business career and the prosperity which he is now enjoying is therefore well merited. He is recognized as one of the prominent German- American citizens of this part of the state and has the warm friendship and high regard of those with whom he has been brought in contact.
