Cooper, who has held the office of city weigher of Joliet under republican administration for eight years and who is engaged in the transfer business and also the breeding of fine horses, was born in Will county, Illinois, June 3, 1872. His father, Needham P. Cooper, was a native of Ohio, came to Will county in 1839 and at once entered upon the work of development along agricultural lines. He has since been closely associated with the farming interests of the county and still resides upon the old homestead in New Lenox township. His wife who in her maidenhood was Margaret L. Francis, was born in Will county in 1834 and died in September, 1902. She was the second or third white child born in the county, her parents having located here when only a few settlers had penetrated into the wild western region to reclaim the district for the purposes of civilization. Unto Mr. and Mrs. Cooper were born two sons and two daughters: Allen F.; Needham Perry, a resident of Moorhead, Minnesota; Margaret L., who resides upon the home farm with her father and is the wife of T. J. Doig, who operates the home farm; and Jessie M., the wife of G. Albert Walz, a resident of Will county. Allen F. Cooper was a student in the public schools of New Lenox, Will county, until 1889, when he entered business life as an employe in the general store of G. S. Hilton, with whom he remained until 1892, when he came to Joliet and embarked in the coal and feed business on his own account. Here he has remained continuously since, his location being at No. 200 South Chicago street. He is also conducting a transfer business and devotes much time to the breeding and training of fine horses. In addition to his varied business interests he is serving as city weigher, having held the office under republican administration for eight years. On the 19th of October, 1899, Mr. Cooper was united in marriage to Miss Roberta Van Deusen, a daughter of Robert and Catherine Van Deusen, of Joliet. Her father was engaged in the furniture trade here for many years and was a well known and honored business man. He died in this city three years ago and Mrs. Van Deusen now resides with Mr. and Mrs. Cooper. The other member of the household is their little son, Robert Allen Cooper, four years of age. The parents are members of the Methodist church and Mr. Cooper belongs to the Union Club, to Matteson lodge, No. 175, A. F. & A. M., and to Joliet council No. 2, of the White Cross. His entire life has been passed in this county and he has so discerningly directed his efforts along well denned lines of labor that he has accomplished goodly success, sustaining, moreover, an unassailable reputation by reason of the methods that he has followed.
